Argo Daniel's Sea Turtle Experience

July 20, 2015

Volleyball
I woke up in the morning and I could tell it was going to be a beautiful day I took a shower got dressed and wandered outside where our guide Staniel was waiting for us. We got to the volleyball court and had the most intense game. But in the end we lost and went to our dorms with the little honor and dignity we had left and prepared myself for the next activity of the day.

Turtle Classroom
I got to the turtle classroom where we learned about the 7 species of turtles which are loggerhead, leatherback, flatback, hawksbill and the green turtles. How their sex depends on the heat of the day. And how they lay more than 160 eggs in two weeks and on average if they lay 10,000 only 1 of those eggs will make it to sexual maturity.

Turtle Excursion
We got to the ocean, had some lunch and jumped straight into the ocean. Half the crew had to assemble themselves in a straight line and make as much noise as they could to scare the sea turtles into a net that the other half of the JASON Argonauts and researchers were holding up. We tried three times and the third time we caught eight turtles and two ran away. After we caught the turtles we chased them around the net and brought them to shore. Once at shore we got to name to measure their body, head, shell, and weight. Then we got to tag them, name them, and release them.
